All guests are provided a comfortable place to spend the night, dinner, breakfast, bagged lunch, laundry services, clothing, medical screening, a life coach , assisted job and housing search.

Self Management and Recovery Training
The House of Refuge also promotes the SMART Recovery® program. SMART Recovery® is the leading self-empowering addiction recovery support group. Our participants learn tools for recovery based on the latest scientific research and participate in a world-wide community which includes free, self-empowering, science-based mutual help groups. Meetings are open to the public unless marked "Closed."

The program offers specific tools and techniques for each of the program points:

Point 1: Enhancing and Maintaining Motivation to Abstain

Point 2: Coping with Urges

Point 3: Problem Solving (Managing thoughts, feelings and behaviors)

Point 4: Lifestyle Balance (Balancing momentary and enduring satisfactions)

SMART and 12 Step Programs
SMART is premised on the belief that each individual finds his own path to recovery. For some participants, that may include 12-step programs, like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA). While the SMART approach differs from AA and NA, it does not exclude them. Some SMART participants do choose to attend AA or NA meetings. Some find that what they hear at AA or NA meetings helps them on their path to permanent recovery.
